Mission Statement

The Bellevue Fire Department is committed to protecting the lives, property, and environment of the citizens we serve through dedicated fire suppression, fire prevention, fire rescue, and public safety services.

History of The Bellevue Fire Department

The Bellevue Fire Department, established shortly after the city’s founding in 1830, began in 1865 as a volunteer “Bucket Brigade” using only basic equipment before modernizing with hand pumpers, hose carts, and eventually steam engines before 1900. Over time, the department became more organized with defined roles and leadership, transitioning into a full-time paid department by the late 20th century, supplemented by volunteers and mutual aid from neighboring communities. Today, the department serves a 97-square-mile area that consists of the City of Bellevue along with York, Thompson, and Lyme Townships. Serving a population of about 13,000.  It operates as a combination department with full-time and part-time firefighters, using a unique response system to manage limited manpower while continuing to provide effective fire protection and public safety services.
